Introduction

From AS level, I learnt a new lesson
I learnt to make sure that whoever you work with was as determined to make a good piece of work as you are.
Unfortunately, this did not work for A2 and I am now working on my own.

Song
Seeing as at the start of this project I had a completely different idea and a project, I have had to come up with an entirely new song and new idea.

I have a friend named Paul Howe who writes and records all of his own songs which was great as I had limited time to find something new.
He is unsigned, but been playing instruments for a large percentage of his life and been in a band for around 5 years that recently split up.

Paul allowed me to search through a website, www.scenedamage.com, to listen to his songs and find one that suited me best.
I wanted something soft and Indie a
s that is the type of music I like and I knew I would be able to come up with some good ideas.

After searching through his songs and listening to the guitar riffs and lyrics in depth, I chose a song named 'Suit for Paris'.

Permission
As I am quite good friends with my artist, it was very easy for me to just quickly e-mail him and get permission for using the song in my work.

The best way to get the permission and Paul's reply was a
s above.

Location permission

For Sam and Alex's scenes I am using Sam's house and will therefore need his permission. Copied from a letter:

'Catherine, it will be fine for you to use my house during the progress of your filming. I hope to see the finished product soon! Yours, Sam.'

For Sam's scenes we will be using my own house, I therefore give my permission.

Planning
My idea will be based around a young, disorientated girl. There will be different shots that will include confusion and depression that in the end turn into happiness due to another person's attention.
Here is my brainstorm:

Storyboard
I have done a lyric by lyric storyboard, and pictures to go with the explanations will be up soon.

Treatment
I had not yet made up my mind as to whether or not I wanted to work with a partner at
the start of the A2 course, but when I realised it was best to work on my own, I knew having only one brain this was going to be a
hard task.
I have recently changed my mind on a few factors to do with music videos in the modern day.
It seems, after watching a lot of music channels, it is true that a high percentage of music videos include the artist as well as telling a stor
y. Ther
efore, my ideas will include both.
The lyrics of the song show that a couple are gloomy and depressed. The fact that the male character is stuck in a 9-5 job and days seem long and repetitive makes them both feel stuck in a place they don't want to be.
This will therefore be portrayed in the music video. The first few scenes of the video will be set in black and white inside the house of the couple. This represents the idea that their life is glum and gloomy. The video tells a story that goes along with the lyrics of the song. This gives a feel of the artist singing about a story he could be either encountering or close to.
Yet, the song does change in the middle/towards the end, and this is where the video contrasts. There is a lyric in the song that says 'washed out and fade away' in which the couple will fade out into a dark background. The next line, though, says 'As patters begin to fade' which represents the idea that the repetition is changing, the couple are doing something about their glum life. This is where colour will reappear and contrast with the black and white lives the couple used to lead. This is also where the actions of the couple change, the male in the couple decides to start spoiling his wife. He surprises his partner to wine and then eventually a trip to Paris in which the lyrics state 'Let's be spontaneous'.
At the end the couple zoom off into the distance as if they are going to live their lives differently and become better people.
A few flashbacks are also used in the video to give the viewers a better idea of the storyline.
I will also try to use as many effects as I can in the video to make it faster and more interesting.

Actor decisions

I have chosen Alexandra Fox as my 'wife'. Seeing as she used to be a Media student herself, she knows how the filming production goes. This will therefore mean she could help out by putting her own ideas in but also knows how to act in front of the camera after producing her own short film last year at AS. Alex also has the exact look I was going for. She is a very pretty, blonde young woman. This means that she will portray the character of a wife very well.

Sam has been chosen to act as both the artist and the 'husband' in the relationship. The fact that Sam lives very close, has a great interest in music and media and was very happy to help gives me the idea that making the music video with him will be as quick and simple as possible as well as him also being able to give ideas as much as he can and if needed.

Costume Planning
Alex will be wearing a dressing gown for part of her filming, to represent the fact that she is a stay at home wife as she is in the kitchen, not getting changed into formal/cas
ual clothes. Her formal/casual clothes will be a pink dress to show her feminine side alongside
grey tights. This shows she is girly and when she is done up nicely, can look beautiful.

Paul will be wearing dark jeans a thin tie and a light shirt. This makes him look more mature and the thin tie, again, gives off the Indie look. I wanted him to look smart, yet still young, as he is trying to portray someone that would be able to look after someone of the same age as him. If he was to wear casual clothes I, personally, do not think it would have given off the same effect.

Sam will be wearing a suit for part of his filming to represent him as in a full-time job. Yet, whilst he wears this suit it portrays the idea that he is unhappy and stuck in a 9-5 job.
When Sam is in his formal/casual clothing, he wears a stripy polo shirt to represent his mature male side as well as jeans to sport a casual look.

Props Preparation
There will be a few props used in the music video.
  • Lamp
  • Stool
  • Acoustic guitar
  • Wine bottle
  • Car
  • Sofa
  • Suitcase
Risk Assessment

  • I need to make sure that the loudness is kept minimal. If members of the public hear loud noise and are distracted or discomforted by it, we will have to stop filming. This means we need to make sure we do not put the music on too loud and ensure that everyone in and around the house is comfortable with what we are doing.
  • I need to make sure that my equipment does not get in the way of anyone passing by or in our location. This will prevent harm to any persons and the equipment.

  • I need to make sure the tripod is always on steady legs. If it is unstable there is risk of it falling over and either hruting someone or breaking.
  • I need to make sure that no equipment is damaged by bad weather when filming outside. This can be prevented by swapping filming days or covering the equipment securely.

Camera angle performance video
Within Sam's location, I am going to keep it simple to en
sure that only he is concentrated on. Most of the time, the camera will be straight in front of Sam to represent the fact that we are only getting one point of view from him, not a mixed one. I

Seeing as Alex and Sam are a couple, I needed to make sure that I had a place that seemed homely and as though two people with '9-5' jobs lived there. I therefore knew that Sam's house would be the perfect place.
His kitchen is the right size, as well as him having a nicely sized slightly empty living room and two cars on his drive. He also has a plain black wall in his bedroom that is perfect for the two to stand in front of and 'fade' out from.
